What does refrigerant do in a mini split?
Refrigerant is the fluid that circulates through your mini split and actually does the work of moving heat. It absorbs heat from the air inside, carries it out through the line set, and releases it outdoors.
Which refrigerants do modern mini splits use?
Modern mini splits use R-410A or the newer R-32. Both are more efficient and less environmentally harmful than older refrigerants, and which one a system takes is determined by the equipment itself rather than by anything decided during the install.
What does it mean when a system is low on refrigerant?
Low refrigerant usually means there is a leak somewhere, since the fluid circulates in a sealed loop and is not consumed. Adding more without fixing the leak is just a band-aid — a licensed technician needs to find and repair the leak before recharging the system.
